Community Groups in Maldens and Coombe could receive funding from Kingston Council, should they need it.

In the last year local groups have received hundreds of pounds worth of grants from Kingston Council's Maldens and Coombe Neighbourhood Committee.

Local councillors have called on organisations who need financial support to come forward and take advantage of a small fund set aside each year.

In a joint statement, Councillor Ken Smith and Councillor Patrick Codd, co-chairs of the Maldens and Coombe Neighbourhood Committee, said: "These are tough times financially for many organisations, particularly charities and new groups just starting up."

"It is vital that we are able to help maintain organisations which benefit the wellbeing of local people."

"It is important that volunteers who contribute so much to our community are able to survive, they are the backbone of the community."

"We will try to help and support organisations who find themselves in difficulty and meet our grant criteria."

The committee is due to meet this week to consider new guidelines on neighbourhood grants.
