In response to our newmaldenpeople contributors, it seems we all could do with a little refresher course on how to make our homes, possessions and oursleves a little safer this festive season in light of the recent robberies that have been happening.

Click the link to see the advice from Kingston Council in their 'Let's wrap up Crime this Christmastime' campaign. Here's a quick overview though:

Keep doors locked even when in the house.

Don't leave gifts under the tree. Put them out on Christmas Eve and only if not in view of any windows.

Don't hide expensive gifts in the shed or garage.

Recycle large boxes that house expensive gifts yourself - it's an advert outside your house to say what's inside.

make a note of serial numnbers on electrical items for free at www.immobilise.com

Some extra tips too:

try to make your home looked as loived in as possible

Don't tell everyone your holiday plans, just trusted neighbours

Arrange for mail to be collected and cancel newspaper and milk deliveries

Ask a neighbour to occassionally park their car in your drive

Ask a neighbour to check your home so that if water pipes burst then it will be detected as soon as possible

Unplug all electrical appliances

Leave your blinds and curtains in their normal position. Only close them if that's what you'd normally do

Look your garage, shed and gates

Wishing you all a crime-free Christmas.

Thanks for this reminder, another tip is to always leave a light on when you go out to make it appear as though someone is in. You can buy timer switches that attach to to your plug socket so lights will come on automatically if you are out for an extended period of time.
