It appears fraudsters have decided to target MoT receipts when selling second hand cars.

Two cases of falsified mileage information have been reported to Kingston Trading Standards.

Alonso Ercilla explained where the scam stems from: "The problem that we have as trading standards officers is that these receipts can be download, and can be very easily manipulated."

"We have come across a number of cases where on the face of it, they've been tampered with and they've changed the odometer reading (mileage)" he added.

The idea is to sell second hand cars, in order to make them appear road worthy.

"You just need the log book and the registration to check the MoT history of the vehicle."

"By going by that you can check the mileage of the vehicle making sure it hasn't been clocked at any point."

You can check MoT records through the VOSA website, enquiries@vosa.gov.uk or the MoT enquiry line 08703 300 444.
