New Malden Sushi seller breaks safety rules

A New Malden Sushi retailer has been find for breaching safety rules including failing to control the risk of E.coli contamination.

Sooryun Kim who runs Jin Mi in Kingston Road admitted eight food hygiene offences when she appeared before Richmond Magistrates.

Customers were allowed to use the same implements to serve themselves raw and cooked meats, not keeping the premises and equipment clean.

There was no handwashing facilities for staff in the food preparation area and employees were not wearing proper overclothes either.

The court heard that Kingston Council had spotted problems as long ago as 2006 and had issued Kim with a warning to improve hygiene in March 2010.

But she allowed standards to deteriorate as identified on three separate inspections during 2012.

Ms Kim's lawyer said that she had allowed standards to slip under pressure and had expressed remorse.

Magistrates said that the offences were serious because of the potential risk to public health.

Ms Kim was fined £4,000 (£500 for each offence) and ordered to pay £1,200 costs plus a victim surcharge of £15.
