More than 30 buildings of historical significance in Kingston are to be opened up to the public, free of charge, for one weekend in September as part of the Heritage Open Days Weekend.
The weekend, which has been coordinated by English Heritage, will take place between Thursday 9th and Sunday 12th September and will give local people a rare opportunity to take a look around a number of historic buildings across the borough, which are not normally open to the public.
Buildings open to the public over the weekend include the Parish Church of John the Baptist - a Grade II listed Jacobean Church; the John Lewis Undercroft – a chalk and flint vaulted cellar built in 1350; and Kingston Council’s Grade II listed Guildhall, where the Mayor or Deputy Mayor will be present.
The Kingston upon Thames Society (KTS) has produced an information leaflet for the Heritage Open Days weekend, with details of over 30 locations which will be available to visit on specific days and times over the weekend. Copies of the leaflet are available from Kingston Library and Kingston Museum.
The Society received a grant from Kingston Council to help produce the information leaflets. Council grant awards are available in the areas of arts, sports, environment, youth and cultural activities, as well as for projects for older people and families.
