New Malden's recycling sites set to close

I've just heard that due to the success of kerb-side recycling in the borough - the recycling rate has almost doubled from 25% to 46% since 2008 - all the recycling sites in New Malden will close permanently at the end of October.

The sites that are closing include Cocks Crescent (which, according to the council has already closed), England Way/California Road, Sheephouse Way (Manor Drive North), Prince of Wales pub (Kingston Road), and St John's Baptist Hall (Malden Road).

While household recycling has been a major success, some people do still use these sites, so their closure is bound to be an inconvenience.

In addition, the four sites remaining open are a fair trek for us New Malden-ites - these are Sainsbury's (Richmond Road, Kingston), Waitrose (Surbiton), Cox Lane (Chessington) and Raeburn Avenue (Surbiton). These will stay open due to the high tonnages of recycling received at each, however they also may be under threat in the future.

For more information on recycling in the borough, call 020 8547 5560 or email environment@rbk.kingston.gov.uk.

What do you think about the closure of these sites? Will it affect you, or are you happy with recycling your waste via the kerb-side collections? Let us know your thoughts!

I got stuck behind the landfill recyling truck this morning in the car, and noticed that as well as people's landfill waste, they were also taking cardboard waste which I thought had to be recycled via the white bags? While I was waiting, I also noticed how incompetent they seemed to be, so I have to agree with you on your untidy operatives comment, MIKENEWS.

Success? Down our street it’s easy to know what day the environmental operatives have visited as most of the recycling is strewn across the road. Street cleaners then occasionally visit to tidy up and does what they put in their barrow go on to be recycled?

The problem is that system isn’t fit for purpose. Strong winds, containers that are too small and environmental operatives who don’t do the job in a tidy way are just some of the issues. I think the council have under estimated how valuable community recycling centres are while over promoting the ‘success’ of kerbside recycling.

I found it took a bit of time to adjust to getting your head around all the various bins and bags to put certain types of waste in! It is better though and at least people can now actually recycle more materials.

I'm not fussed. I am glad that the council has made it easier to recycle waste, I used to use the paperbanks and occasionally bottle banks at Tesco Extra but now I can do this at home. I guess some people do still use these sites, for example, if they have more waste than usual, but hopefully it won't be too great a loss.

I think that the home recycling method and approach is a very good thing and long overdue. I find it so much easier to now recycle on a weekly basis and have myself increased my efforts to be more environmentally aware.

The site closures are unfortunate for those that still use them and it will present them with an inconvenience but as soon as they switch to the ease of home recycling, I'm sure most will ultimately prefer it. Sometimes I used to go down to these sites and they'd be full to bursting with waste and in dire need of emptying so there were times where I'd have to take all the rubbish home again or head to another site.

Now I can feel like I'm making an increased effort as I'm actually recylcing more types of material and waste than before.
