The Best Meal of my Life, at Al Forno New Malden

I have been to a fair amount of restaurants in my life, including some fantastic restaurants in Italy. And I can honestly say, that one of my best restaurant experiences ever was at Al Forno, New Malden. We loved everything about the evening - the staff were fantastic, the food was delicious, I felt like we had been magically transported to Italy, and the owner was amazing! I can honestly Al Forno is my new favourite restaurant - and I cannot wait to go back again!

    Over-rated

I've been to Al Forno in New Malden 3 times and find it pales in comparison to the Wimbledon and Kingston sister restaurants.

The service has been pretty decent on all 3 occassions. However, the quality of food has ranged from the awful to the average. The pizzas are pretty good I'll give you that, but everything else is very sub-standard.

If we take the monkfish for example, it was cooked very well but basically served on an ocean of oil, meaning after a couple of mouthfuls, the oil overpowered the fish. My friends have ordered the chicken in some kind of tomoato sauce which he was very disappointed by. The same can be said of the seafood linguine, which is a decentg portion size but is tasteless.

The antipasto is also terrible. The portion is very small and the quality of meat reminded me of the wafter thin economy slices of spam you get in the Tesco basics range.

As one of the waiters so eloquently put it 'This is a fake Italian restaurant'!

New Malden needs a good 'Italian' restaurant, but this is definitely not it!

Sunday early evening Italian Treat - Fantastic Food, let down by the service.

We have been to this restaurant on many occasion; Mainly because of the convenience and partly due to the limited restaurants which are in New Malden (other than Korean when you're spoilt for choice!)

I have to agree with the above review, the food is faultless - very tasty, fresh ingredients and piping hot - one of the best "Traditional" Italians I have ever eaten in. Atmosphere is cosy, restaurant is comfortable and spotlessly clean.

Service is such a let down. The staff try their best, but only a couple of them speak decent English and they appear as if they are rushing you all the time. Its difficult to put your finger on problem, but it the service just isn't right for the type of restaurant it is - they don't match.

This is disappointing as the chefs are clearly very skilled and produce fabulous food.

But don't let this review put you off! For good food and value for money - its worth every penny. But tipping might not be on your priority list when you come to pay!

    Happy Eating.

Oh - we went with our toddler and its quite baby friendly there, if this helps.

    Lovely food, iffy service

I've been to Al Fornos many times. Mainly because they really do a great pizza, gorgonzola gnocchi and steak with blue cheese (not all on the same sitting mind!). However compared to their sister restaurant in Wimbledon, it really lacks service with a smile and charm. On an empty lunchtime, we had to ask for our drinks 3 times and sadly the staff just don't match up to the food. Maybe the chefs could come out and serve us instead, they're clearly the talented ones.

    Al Forno

Al Forno is a decent Italian restaurant located on the high street. You can tell there’s a good team spirit amongst the staff which always helps in making your experience more enjoyable. Not taking away the fact the food here is nice and is renowned for their excellent pizzas. At lunchtime they offer set meals which is of fantastic value.
